The principle of laying floor tiles is the same regardless of whether they are quarry tiles or vinyl. Floor tiles come in a variety of materials and styles such as; ceramic, natural stone, vinyl or porcelain.
Tiled floors are growing ever more popular and it's not surprising due to their durability. They are water-resistant and resistant to stains and spillages. They are available in numerous colours, patterns and shapes to suit all tastes and properties.
One thing that should be kept in mind when fixing floor tiles is will they restrict access to pipes and cables that are running under the floor. If access is restricted and this access needs to be open under building regulations then alternative access should be thought about.
If your floor tiles are unglazed then they must be sealed with the correct proprietary sealant once laid. Also if you are looking for the strongest floor tiles for your property maintenance work then you should look at the underneath of the tile as the thicker and darker the tile the stronger it is. Tiles are fired at a higher temperature (vitrified) so that the particles fuse together. This results in the tiles being almost unbreakable when laid. However it is advised to purchase a few extra tiles just in case any of them crack or break whilst being cut or fit.
Tiling can be done on most floors within a property as long as the correct preparation is in place. If the floor is not level you will need to pour self levelling floor compound onto it. Obviously all fitting and furnishings should be removed from the room before any work is carried out but one thing that should not be forgotten about is the door of the room. All inward opening doors should be removed as tiling a floor will slightly raise the floor level meaning if the door isn't removed you wouldn't be able to open it. Adjustments to the door will then need to be made before re-hanging. Also remove any cupboard doors at floor level before starting.
The most important aspect of laying tiles onto a floor is getting the first tile laid correctly as the position of this tile will determine the position of all the other tiles in the room.
Once tiles have been laid on the floor of your property they do not require polishing as they come with a natural glaze or matt finish; polishing them would just make them dangerous to walk on. Sweeping and mopping your tiled floor is how they need to be maintained.
